Choosing security cameras and locks

A plain-English checklist for homes and small businesses. No made-up ratings, no invented prices. Just the questions worth answering before you buy.

Affiliate disclosure (FTC): Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and buy, MLA 72 Tech may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Today, the only live affiliate link is the “Shop eufy” link. Links for other brands will be marked when they exist. Commissions don’t change the price you pay, and we try to say plainly when a product isn’t a good fit. Our advice comes first, and you’re always welcome to ask us directly.

Six questions to answer first

1. Wired or wire-free? Battery and solar cameras are quick to place anywhere. Wired PoE cameras take more work to install but give you one cable for power and video and are a common choice for permanent, always-on coverage.

2. Where does the video live? Some systems store footage locally (microSD card, a hub, or a recorder). Others lean on a cloud subscription for features. Read the plan details before you buy, because subscriptions can change what a camera can do.

3. How much of the property needs coverage? Count doors, driveways, and blind spots. A few well-placed cameras usually beat many badly placed ones.

4. Does it need to work with what you already have? Hubs, doorbells, sensors and locks often only work inside one brand’s ecosystem.

5. Home or business? Businesses often care about recording 24/7, retention time, and multiple users, which points toward recorder-based systems.

6. Who will install it? DIY is fine for many setups. For wiring, weatherproofing, or larger systems, a local installer can save time.
